Dear school board,

I believe that homework should be banned. Homework is a big cause of debate in the modern academic world, and I want you to know and realize just how mostly, it is affecting students in negative ways. My goal in writing this letter is to make you, the school board, completely ban homework from the homework-ridden grounds of NIST. I believe that homework is affecting students in negative ways because homework is just adding stress to students, they are doing it when they are tired, because this can take away time from other commitments and hobbies, and because it can completely mess up students’ sleep cycles.

Firstly, I believe homework should be banned because doing it just adds stress to students. Sometimes when students do homework it adds unnecessary stress to students, and then this can distract students from access to leisure time and community activities that also teach important life skills. A study by scholar Denise Pope at Stanford revealed that out of 4,300 students at high performance schools 60% considered or stated that homework is a primary source of stress. Also, if students are required to do homework, then what happens when they have a test coming up? Homework takes away from their revision time, and this can affect their test scores. Not only will this create a bad reputation for the student but what people don’t realize is that it also creates a bad reputation for the school. Then the parents of the students assume that the teaching at the school is bad, and then they might make their child move to a different school! Over time the school could become less and less popular, and to prevent it all starts with simple matter of banning homework.

Secondly, homework should be banned from schools because students are made to do it when they are tired. Every single school in the world sets homework to be done after school (that is why it is called homework), and usually after the 8 or more hour school day most students are tired. This means that students will not have their full concentration when they are attending to their homework. Because of this, their performance will not be as good as it could be, and this would mean that their overall grade would go down, and isn’t the whole point of an education or a school to help you become a better and smarter person? Also, in some students’ cases if they are completely booked for every single hour of the day, then they will not have any time to complete the homework! When a situation like this occurs, teachers start to not trust the students, and this just creates bad views of the students in the teachers eyes. All because they were forced to complete homework when they were tired!

Another reason why I believe homework should be banned is because it takes away time or can completely eliminate time for leisure activities, other commitments, or hobbies. Sure, there are some positive impacts of homework such as it giving assistance to students, helping students revise topics, etc., but there in all of the time students are made to spend on homework, what about all other commitments and hobbies in life? For example, if a student was required to do an hour or two of homework, then they might have been denied the time to, say, practice with the school sports team or maybe a local job that they have been wanting to sign up for. This is why we beg for homework to be banned.

The fourth reason why I believe homework should be banned from school across the world is because it takes away and can completely mess up students’ sleep cycles, which can cause them to receive dangerous or plainly annoying health issues. Some people might say that it is the student’s’ fault that they are sleeping late. What they have not realized and considered is that most students live far away from school! Adding in the commute times, meal times, family gathering times, etc, it is natural that students are working late into the night completing homework! A study from teenink.com shows that students perform best in school when they recieve 10–12 hours of sleep each night, while only 15% of teenagers in america reported themselves sleeping 8 hours or more on school nights, according to the national sleep foundation of america. Also, when you don’t sleep enough, you start to get sudden mood swings, which can severely affect your performance in school and your relationships with your friends and/or family. Another negative effect of not sleeping enough is that you can become prone to health issues such as narcolepsy (high tendency of falling asleep when you enter relaxing surroundings), insomnia (difficulty falling asleep), obesity (becoming overweight), irritability (high tendency of becoming irritated or annoyed), and depression (a mood disorder causing frequent sadness, inactivity, and difficulty in thinking/concentration). Also, the highest cause of death in teenagers is car accidents, and not enough sleep can lead to those too! To think we can prevent this all simply by removing homework from students’ lives makes me continue to wonder why schools still give out homework.

In conclusion, I believe that homework should be banned from school. I believe this because homework just adds unnecessary stress to students, students are doing it when they are tired after a long day of school, it can use valuable time in which the student could be doing their hobby/learning a new skill, and it can create unnecessary issues in students’ sleep cycles.

With all of this in mind, I sincerely hope that you all please, please, please, take all of this into account, confer with the board of the school, and proceed into making the decision of banning homework in NIST.

Yours truly,

Maher
